How to Put Sales Territories on Google Maps (My Maps Export)

Your territory design lives in mapping software, but your field team lives in Google Maps. Google My Maps is the bridge: export your territories from AlignMix as a KML layer, load it into My Maps, and every rep can see their boundaries on the map they already use, on desktop or on their phone, with a shareable link.

Why Export Territories to Google My Maps?

Reps live there anyway, so territory boundaries inside Google Maps let them check “is this prospect mine?” from the parking lot, navigation one tap away. Sharing is a link, not a license: not everyone who needs to see territories needs the design software, and a My Maps link gives managers, marketing, and new hires a live view for free. And it layers with your data, since My Maps supports multiple layers, boundaries, account pins, rep home bases, so one shared map can carry the whole field picture.

The Export, Step by Step

First, finish the alignment in AlignMix, balance checked, contiguity verified, assignments final, then export the map as KML (Google’s map-layer format), which AlignMix generates with territories colored and labeled. Next, create a map at Google My Maps: sign in, start a new map, and import the KML file as a layer, and your territories appear over the standard Google basemap. Finally, style and share, adjusting layer colors if you need to, then sharing the link, view-only for the field, edit access for sales ops. Reps open it in Google Maps on mobile through the same account. The video below shows the full round trip in a couple of minutes.

Know the Limits

My Maps is a viewer, not a design tool. It displays territories beautifully but can’t rebalance them, roll up revenue, or check integrity, so design changes still happen in your territory mapping software, then you re-export. Watch the size limits too, since My Maps caps layer complexity, so a full national ZIP-level alignment may need simplifying or splitting by region, while single-territory or district exports always fit (exporting one rep’s territory as their personal map is a popular pattern). And keep one source of truth: the My Maps link is a projection of the alignment, not the alignment, so when territories change, re-export and update the layer, and keep the underlying data flowing to your CRM through the Excel exports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I show sales territories in Google Maps?

Yes. Export the territories as a KML file from your mapping software and import it as a layer in Google My Maps. The map is then viewable in Google Maps, including on mobile, through a share link.

Can reps see their territory on their phone?

Yes. A shared My Maps map opens in the Google Maps app under Saved, then Maps, boundaries and all.

Does the Google My Maps export update automatically?

No, it’s a snapshot. After a realignment, re-export the KML from AlignMix and replace the layer in My Maps.
