How to Import Segmented Sales Accounts (Tier Your Customers on the Map)

Your CRM already knows which customers are worth a weekly call and which are long-shot prospects. Bring that classification along when you import, and every account lands on the map sorted by symbol and color instead of as an anonymous dot. It’s one extra column in the spreadsheet, and it changes what the map can tell you.

What a Segmented Import Actually Is

It’s your normal account file with a segment column added: the tier or type each account belongs to. AlignMix reads that column, gives each segment its own symbol and color, and builds the legend for you. You can rename or restyle the segments later (see working with account segments), but classifying them at import beats hand-tagging a few thousand accounts after the fact.

Setting Up the File

One row per account. Columns for account ID, name, ZIP code, revenue, current rep, and the segment. The thing that trips people up is inconsistent labels: “A”, “a”, and “Tier A” register as three separate segments, so standardize them before you import. Everything else follows the usual Excel setup rules (ZIPs formatted as text, no merged cells, no duplicate rows). Keep it to a handful of segments. If you need finer detail, put it in another data column rather than another symbol.

What It Gets You

The obvious payoff is fairer balancing. Two territories can hold the exact same number of accounts and still be worlds apart in value, if one is stacked with A-tier customers and the other is mostly prospects. Segments let you balance on the accounts that pay the bills, which is one of the principles that separates a good alignment from a merely tidy one.

There’s a faster payoff too. Once the map is color-coded, you can see at a glance which territories are thick with existing customers and which are wide-open prospect country. That tells you where to send hunters and where to send farmers. And when you’re dragging ZIP codes around to fix balance, the segments show whether a move hands a rep a marquee account or just filler.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I import account segments into AlignMix?

Add a segment column to your account spreadsheet, one row per account, and import as usual. Each segment gets its own symbol and color, and the legend is built for you.

Can I change segments after importing?

Yes. You can rename segments and restyle their symbols and colors any time. The classification comes from your data, but how it looks on the map is fully editable.

How many account segments should I use?

Three to six keeps the map readable. For finer analysis, hold the extra detail in additional data columns instead of adding more symbols.
